History of Valentines Day

For many people Valentine's Day is a very special occasion. It

is a time to celebrate the love that is shared by a man and a woman and to spend time together as a couple. Many couples celebrate this holiday by having special dates, buying gifts for each other, or even renewing their wedding vows. But, just who was this person named Valentine and what did he do that was so phenomenal that it granted his right to his very own special day each year?

Origins of Valentines Day

There are several legends that have been told as to what began the celebration of St. Valentine's Day. One of those legends that seem to be more favorable began in Rome during the third century. During that time a priest was serving by the name of Valentine. Rome's Emperor was Claudius II and he believed that men who were single made better soldiers. Therefore, he decided to outlaw the possibility of marriage for all young men who were near the age to become soldiers.

Love Prevails ...

St. Valentine, the priest, felt this was terribly wrong of the Emperor. So, he continued to secretly perform marriages for young couples in love. Unfortunately once this became known to Emperor Claudius, he had Valentine put to death. According to this legend February 14th is celebrated because it is the anniversary of St. Valentine's death.

Another Valentines Day History legend

According to another legend, St. Valentine was held in prison before being put to death. During this time, it was believed that he sent the very first valentine greeting to a young girl whom he had fallen in love with when she came to visit him in prison on occasion. Some also believe this young girl was the jailer who was in charge of Valentine's imprisonment until he was put to death. Thus came the phrase "From your Valentine" which is supposedly how he signed his greetings that were sent to his love.

True Valentines Day History Remains Uncertain

In actuality, it is not known for certain if this holiday is named for one Saint named Valentine or for several. According to Catholic belief, there were at least 3 martyred saints who were named Valentine. However, it has never been made clear as to which, if any, of these saints were the inspiration for the celebration of Valentine's Day. For all we know, none of these legends may have ever occurred and the tale of St. Valentine may be a fictional love story, much like Romeo and Juliet.

One thing is certain....

One thing has remained the same over the centuries of celebrating St. Valentine's Day. This is the fact that it is the one day of the year that love and romance is celebrated. It is the time when we express our true feelings of love, romance, and passion to our special someone. Regardless of whom the original St. Valentine really was, this is the perfect opportunity to take time to show appreciation and caring to those we hold most dear. It is a day to celebrate that one special person who makes our lives complete and fills our hearts with a feeling of happiness and joy that cannot be put into everyday words.
